Gryphon Leisure Centre Charity Week
Each year at the end of the football season, the Gryphon Leisure Centre and Team Gryphon FC hold a ‘Charity Week’ in aid of the West Dorset District Council’s Chairpersons chosen charity and for the last few years it has been the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance. The centre holds a 7-A-Side Tournament and recently a Charity Match, involving a local radio station and TGFC! So far this venture has raised nearly £1000 for charity, and a big thank you to all those who have helped make it such am event, 2009 looks like it could be even bigger?
SUPER 7'S FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT
PAMFA SUPER 7's - SATURDAY 3 MAY 2008
Team Gryphon entered the 4th Annual 7-A-Side Football Tournament with high hopes, having got to the semi-finals last year losing to eventual winners Dream 8. Team Gryphon though enjoyed huge representation this year, with players in a number of teams entered.
TEAM GRYPHON where drawn into Group Two, and where drawn against KELLYS HEROS, LEGENDS (2005 Winners), INTER OLDFIELD and SPR, James Trebble gave us the win in our opening game to beat KELLYS HEROS 1-0, Trebble also scored to give TGFC a point as we drew with the LEGENDS, in the third game of four, TEAM GRYPHON also drew with SPR, Trevor Perry scoring the goal this time, TGFC needed to win its final game to move into the semi-final and it duly came as two goals from Martyn Shaw and the fastest goal of the tournament from Matt Plowman gave TGFC a 3-0 win, and a semi-final show down verses PAMFA WIZARDS.
In the semi-final we lost to eventual winners PAMFA WIZARDS 2-1, Matt Plowman giving us hope, before the Wizards scored their second and the winner.
In Group One, we had TEAM GRYPHON REJECTS, COMPTON ROVERS and PAMFA WIZARDS all with TGFC players in their ranks, THE WHITE COUGARS, DYNAMO KEBAB and the DANCING WOMBATS joined these three teams, all aiming to win the group and progress, in fact it was PAMFA WIZARDS who won the group by 3 points and faced TEAM GRYPHON, and DYNAMO KEBAB piped the DANCING WOMBATS on goal difference to face Group Two winners LEGENDS in the other semi-final.
PAMFA WIZARDS beat TGFC 2-1, and in the other semi-final DYNAMO KEBAB needed extra time to beat LEGENDS 1-0, with the WIZARDS winning the final 2-0.
VT TRAINING SUPER 7's - SATURDAY 12 MAY 2007
The 2007 tournament had in its ranks the 2005 winners WATERSIDE COURT GENTLEMANS CLUB (LEGENDS) and 2006 winners LONGBURTON WIZARDS. Together with the 5-A-Side Winter Season winners WAHAAY BOYS & TOON ARMY (5 STAR) and a supporting cast that not only lived up their billing but also surpassed the lead actors making it into the final four and eventual winner!
TEAM GRYPHON won all its group games, beating POLICE DOGS 1-0, WATERSIDE COURT 3-0 and WAHAAY BOYS 2-0, with a final victory over QUIT YOUR JIBBA JABBA 2-0 to book a place in the semi-finals. Where they were pitched against Group Two winners DREAM 8, with QUIT YOUR JIBBA JABBA joining them in the semi-finals against TOON ARMY who also won all of its four games won comfortably.
The semi-finals was a story of the runners up over coming their opponents and booking their place in the final, TOON ARMY lost out to QUIT YOUR JIBBA JABBA, and in the second semi-final it needed extra time to decide a winner, TEAM GRYPHON looked to have won but blew a 2-0 lead to lose out 2-4 in the end.
The Final itself was a tight affair, which saw QUIT YOUR JIBBA JABBA add their name to the trophy and become crowned 2007 winners, by beating DREAM 8 in an entertaining final. In fact it was a fantastic tournament, enjoyed by all, regardless of the weather!
CHARITY CUP MATCH
DORSET & SOMERSET AIR AMBULANCE CHARITY CUP Sunday 11 May'08 TGFC vs. Bishops Caundle vs. Orchard FM vs. Ivel FM

Team - SMITH. PERRY. NEWTON. PEIRSON. NOYCE. PARTRIDGE. C.OSMENT. BREWER. MABEY. COOPER. TREBBLE Sub - TAYLOR
Team Gryphon ran out of steam, in the boiling heat as the home side were victors in the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance Charity Cup Final, after the 3rd place play off was won on penalties by Ivel FM it was the turn of the two football teams to battle it out for the trophy, Bishops Caundle buoyed by the news that they had gained promotion to Division One as runners up started the quickest and proved to good on the day for TGFC. Once the second goal was scored, trying to get a positive result proved even harder as Team Gryphon. But at the end of a very good day, which was all about raising money for charity, Bishops were worthy winners in the end. Team Gryphon and the Gryphon Leisure Centre would like to thank all the staff and helpers at Bishops Caundle Sports Club, Referees Ian Bolton, Dave Mountain, and West Dorset District Council Chairman Ron Coatsworth for presenting the trophy and all four teams, Bishops Caundle Colts (1st), Team Gryphon (2nd), Ivel FM (3rd), and Orchard FM Allstars (4th) who made the tournament.
SEMI-FINAL - TEAM GRYPHON FC ( 1 ) 2 - 2 ( 1 ) ORCHARD FM ALLSTARS FC
(TGFC win 4-3 on sudden death penalties) - Partridge, Mabey
Team - SMITH. PERRY. NEWTON. PEIRSON. NOYCE. PARTRIDGE. C.OSMENT. BREWER. MABEY. COOPER. TREBBLE Sub - TAYLOR
The semi-finals paired a football team verses a radio station, the opening semi-final saw Bishops Caundle Colts overcome Ivel FM, 4-2, although as with last years final, in which Ivel came back from 3-0 down, they just couldn’t do enough to beat the Blackmore Vale Division Two runners up. The second semi-final, with the winners meeting the Colts saw Team Gryphon against Orchard FM Allstars, who took the lead in the opening seconds / minute, the goal came from a corner and it took TGFC quite a while to get back into the game, they didn’t though, a Marcus Partridge goal, and Rhys Mabey doubled TGFC lead and what should have been a comfortable win? Orchard kept going and got their reward in the closing minutes with an equaliser. The tie moved into penalties with Gaz Peirson, Mark Brewer and Rhys Mabey all slotting home their effort, as did though Orchard FM, so it was down to sudden death penalties, Peirson scored again, but the Orchard penalty taker hit the upright and out!

IVEL FM Report - taken from www.ivelfm.com - Team Gryphon took on the Ivel Fm team in a charity football match in aid of the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance on the AstroTurf at the Gryphon Leisure Centre in Sherborne on Sunday 13th May. The weather was awful but the Ivel team produced one of the great comebacks of all time to fight back from 3-0 down at half time to draw the match 3-3. The Ivel fm goals came from a Team Gryphon player we borrowed for the second half and James Parfit (2) one of the management team from the Chicago Rock Cafe in Yeovil. There was major drama when Chris Criddle had to go off after 25 minutes with a damaged ankle.
TGFC Report - taken from MATCH REPORTS 2006/07) - Team Gryphon entertained Ivel FM in the VT Charity Cup on Sunday morning, in aid of the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance, as the rain bucketed down the teams kicked off, Team Gryphon started the game as though they wanted to get out of the rain as quickly as possible racing into a 3-0 half-time lead, without reply, although Ivel lost their keeper to a serious injury and had to borrow one our subs, after only twenty minutes. The Management made a few changes for this 'charity friendly', with Joint Managers Tristan Cooper and Peter Diffey both making their starting debut, plus new recruit Lewis Bacon his. This was our final game of the 2006/07 season and one that saw a welcome return to the team of Paul Macinnes, Rob Newton and Andy Bastable, all after long injury lay offs. The game itself was pretty one sided, and after a sustained period of pressure, which saw Diffey excel in centre midfield, treading the ball though the Ivel defence, with the precision, and insight of the pro he was ten years ago, his passing found Matt Plowman who opened the scoring with a 6-yard drive, then after a great cross from Cooper, Lewis Bacon sealed his debut with a goal from outside the box 2-0 and job done? Director of Football, Pete Diffey was replaced by Matt Wisdom and TGFC scored their third this time by ‘Top Goalscorer’ Mark Brewer.
With the rain not letting off, in fact getting worse, the second half kicked off and this time it was Ivel FM who had the loins share of the game, in fact they staged a remarkable come back, when the second half started it was really all about how many more TGFC would score, but no, and credit to Ivel FM, guest player Stuart Wells started the fight back when he scored and then should have had a second minutes later ten minutes after the re-star. Team Gryphons centre defence pairing played a short clearance, which put the full back on the back foot and from it Ivel FM reduce the score to 3-2. Their equaliser came minutes before the end, as tiredness and the weather started to affect the home side, but with the down pour came a renewed desire by the away side, who pushed on for a winner, it didn't come, but Plowman had a final effort for Team Gryphon to deservedly win it just as the final whistle was blown and an end was brought to a great game, which really was a game of two half’s, but as it was for charity, the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance, a draw was a fair result?
Thanks to Neil Quigley and the IVEL FM team, Ian Bolton the referee, and Coopers Catering of Hamworthy for the refreshments, and finally to everyone who braved the weather to support both teams and a deserved charity, thanks.
